Sound Suit

For our first sculpture assignment we were put into groups and challenged to make Nick Cave inspired sound suits.  Now I say we were challenged because there was a small catch; the entire suit had to be constructed out of paper.  We were allowed to use non-paper sound making objects, but they would have to be concealed.  As if this wasn't tough enough, we were also instructed not to decorate the suit in any way.  This meant we couldn't paint it, adorn it, or do anything extra to make it look pretty.  However, the finished result needed to look aesthetically pleasing in the craft.  And so the journey began...

We started off with pretty much no idea what to do, but after throwing around a few ideas things began to click and we started rolling paper.  We rolled black paper, red and white tissue paper, and paper towels into long strips.  We did some by hand and some using a drill until we collected an abundance.
We used these rolled paper strips to form skirts, armbands, and legbands.

We also made a headdress, definitely influenced by the Nick Cave videos we had seen.

I was very happy with the finished result.  We created a complete multi-piece soundsuit using only paper that was aesthetically pleasing and cohesive in craft and design.

and it was totally wearable!

see it in motion!
